Welcome to Smith County Middle School! Principal Mike Lytle and the Smith County Middle School faculty is proud to announce the naming of the Smith County Middle School Owls to the State of Tennessee Award school list. The SCMS Owls have been recognized as one of the top five percent of schools in the State of Tennessee.
The Tennessee Department of Education accountability system, designed through the state’s waiver from No Child Left Behind, names Reward, Priority and Focus schools. Smith County Middle School was named as a Reward-Progress school. A reward progress school is five percent of schools with the highest progress in the state (using one-year TVAAS index values). Smith County Middle School has also exited the state's focus list. Schools have demonstrated significant progress in the area or areas for which they were identified as Focus Schools and have earned their way off the Focus school list. An example of a focus school would be the achievement gap between special education and non-special education students.
Smith County Middle School strives to be the preeminent academic school in the state through rigorous instruction and high expectations of our students. The SCMS mascot is the Owl, in Greek mythology, the owl is the symbol for Athena, the goddess of wisdom. SCMS operates one of the top Accelerated Reader programs in the nation in words read and AR points earned from student read fiction and nonfiction books. The SCMS Junior Beta team has been recognized three times as a School of Distinction by the National Junior Beta Club. The SCMS Health Occupation Students of America club had eleven students qualify for national convention and one team finish in the top ten of the nation in the 2016-2017 school year.
Smith County Middle School principal Mike Lytle, assistant principal Christina Watts-Martin, and the entire faculty and staff believe in creating a middle school environment that is challenging and engaging for students. SCMS strives to offer a wide range of academic and athletic programs to involve as many students as possible in school activities. SCMS believes that an active and engaged learner will become a productive and successful adult for the Smith County Community. SCMS is a proud Owl parliament!
